CD Review – May, 2018
Blue Barry – Smoky Mountain Blues Society
Every once in a while you run into one of those guys who can play anything. I mean every instrument, sings, writes, produces, the package. Well here’s one for you. James Byfield, also know as Blind Lemon Pledge, has a new CD out called “Evangeline,” and it will make a believer of you. Blind Lemon Pledge is a master acoustic instrumentalist, and this his seventh CD is just killer! Starting off with an old field holler style song he runs right through many different styles of music. It is unbelievable how he plays every instrument on the CD. Blind Lemon Pledge has another band he plays with, but this solo stuff is unreal. With a great voice, and a wonderful background of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House and Skip James, he shows his heart and roots here! This ten cut CD features jazz, salsa, jug band, blues, and some great slide work. It is well put together and quite pleasing to the ear. I don’t know how he can keep it all straight, but he does. With great songwriting, wonderful musicianship, and a soft easy voice, he just draws you into his world. You can check him out at www.blindlemon-pledge.com This Bay Area monster comes out of the depths to deliver some find jazz, country, cajun, and soulful blues for sure. This CD is what he’s been wanting to do for quite some time, and now he unleashes his beautiful music on us. Thanks buddy! We appreciate it! Blind Lemon Pledge – “Evangeline” available on Amazon, ITunes, and CD Baby. Better check it out. One Love, Blue Barry – Smoky Mountain Blues Society.
