CD Review: Chris Daniels and the Kings – with Freddi Gowdy, Blues With Horns Vol 1, October, 2017
Blue Barry, Smoky Mountain Blues Society
I don’t do this very often but here it is! Go get this one! Chris Daniels and the Kings with Freddi Gowdy – “Blues With Horns.” www.chrisdaniels.com is the place. With their 15th album in 33 years of playing around this big old world, Chris Daniels and the Kings got a homerun here! “Blues With Horns,” goes back to old blues bands of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s with the cool horn sections. Some people think that blues is just 12-bar, but that is far from all there is! Here is proof. No matter what cool thing they play, the horns are right in there making the song! Sometimes they fall in so sweetly you don’t realize they’re there until they stop playing. Now that’s refreshing! Chris doesn’t fool around. Not only does he sing, play guitar and slide, but plays synth as well! Trading vocal licks with Freddi Gowdy they are a powerful team! The Kings, a most excellent 5-piece, make it a 7-piece band with Chris and Freddi, are a beautifully well-traveled, seasoned blues band! But there’s more. Sitting in with them are other greats. How about Sonny Landreth on slide, John Magni and Doug Krause on keyboards. The horns are unreal. Here are these killer players! Jim Waddell on alto and tenor sax, and vocals, Darryl Abrahamson on trumpet on vocals, PLUS…. Bob Rebhoz tenor sax and horn arrangements and Daren Krammer on trombone also helping on horn arrangements. Crazy good! You don’t like this, go back to whatever you been listening to. This CD is dedicatd to Mamie Smith, Albert King, Al Kooper, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnny Taylor, Koko Taylor and all of those old guys who had those great horn sections! Now if you got those people in your blood you better get this CD. The evolution of great horns! Most excellent. You’re welcome……blue barry – smoky mountain blues society.
