The sixth Blues Cruise will feature the bands that SMBS sent to the IBCs: Jonny Monster Band and Filibilly!

Jonny Monster Band

Originally from the Hudson Valley in New York but now based out of Knoxville, TN, 2019 IBC semi-finalists, The Jonny Monster Band should not be missed! Jonny Monster’s original mix of acoustic blues and hard dynamic electric guitar is like a runaway locomotive that steam into any venue. Having opened for greats like Johnny Winter, Lucky Peterson, and Booker T. Jones, Jonny Monster has headlined his own shows down the Eastern Coast from Burlington, VT to Naples, FL, as well as released a self-titled record, and an exciting follow up “Bad Times Before” with a full band. With East Tennessee’s own Andy Lewis on bass and Kevin Redding on drums, Jonny Monster’s high-energy aggressive guitar style continues to captivate audiences and make JMB a must-see act.

Filibilly Duo

The Filibilly Duo is a combination of fingerstyle and slide guitar and the vocal harmonies of Rey Pineda and Jen Wolery. The Knoxville, TN, musicians perform soulful, acoustic blues that resembles a gentle breeze that penetrates through the bones — a satiating experience to the ears.

Filipino-American Pineda has been immersed in the Delta blues for more than two decades. He is a charter member of The Smoky Mountain Blues Society and has been performing in Knoxville since 1997. Pineda grew up in the Philippines where he was heavily influenced by the American music broadcasting from the U.S. Clark Air Base in Angeles City. He lived in Japan for two years, then moved to the U.S. in 1988. He played with a blues trio The Delta Souls in 1998-2001, and with The Pineda Band in 2001-05. “I play the blues because it soothes my soul. When I make people happy with my music, it boomerangs back to me,” Pineda says.

Ohio-born Jen is a multi-talented actress, dancer and singer who has delivered performances that touched diverse hearts in many theaters and stages. As a teenager, she trained to sing opera. Wolery possesses a sultry voice that transcends blues, jazz and Americana. “I’ve been making noise in one form or another since I was a child and I’ll keep doing it till the day I die,” says Wolery. She moved to Knoxville in 2007 and had performed with bands Lo-Pass Filterz, Prezberries, Barrel House Blues Band, Jen & Juice, Mighty Blue and, currently, with Filibilly.

Together, Pineda and Wolery present a one-of-a-kind sensational performance. Listening to The Filibilly Duo transports you to the spirit of the music revolution that spans from the 1920s to the present.
