Billy Gibbons – The Big Bad Blues

August 2018

Oh my lands did summer ever get better!  Well, on its way is the new Billy Gibbons solo CD “The Big Bad Blues.”  If you don’t know who Billy Gibbons is, just stop reading right now.  Or better yet, hang in there and find out!  Billy is the guitarist for ZZ Top, and vocalist, for this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band!  They have toured the world, I mean planet earth, and are certainly know “Nationwide.”

Well Billy decided to jump out there with this new solo CD and it is just wonderful.  Soon to be legendary and following in his own footsteps Texas-style, kick your ass blues guitar and boogie!  With eleven cuts Billy just drips music out of the neck of his guitar on every cut. Does he ever have some outstanding people with him.  From the opening lick it’s vintage Billy Gibbons scorching the guitar, slinging those notes in every direction, slow gliding up that blues trail with his steady groove and amazing vocals, as he slaps us right in the face with his love and respect for those he learned from!

Billy has a blues tradition that goes back to the roots of the idiom.  He is a walking encyclopedia of blues greats, and plays them heartfelt and wide open.  There are songs on here from Bo Diddley to Muddy Waters, and some of Billy’s originals as well!  With eleven cuts he delivers the goods!

Several other fabulous people are on here.  Let’s take a look!  James Harman plays some magnificent harp!  I mean he always plays well, but he just nails it here!  Billy blows some fat harp too.  It just fits that style you know.  He also has Mike “The Drifter” Flanigan on piano, and Joe Hardy on bass keeping him honest.  Drummers include Greg Morrow and Matt Sorum, and they are magnificent!  Austin Hanks lays down some great guitar as well.  Over all this album is just killer.  If you like ZZ Top you’ll love this! “The Big Bad Blues,” don’t leave nobody behind.  Jump on this train and ride it for miles! Go to  Release date is September 21, 2018.  Hope you can wait that long!  It’s been a joy to listen to and review this CD.  My man!  Thanks Billy, hope to see you soon.   One Love, Blue Barry – Smoky Mountain Blues Society.
